Stopped at a small town park I have never hunted before over lunch today. First deep coin signal was hitting in the wheat penny range. I dug it out and was surprised to see a nice green indian staring back at me. I couldn't see the date so I hit it with my water spray bottle and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the date. 1877!!. This is my second 1877 indian head now. I dug one last year and unfortunately I scratched it good with my digger. Not this time! This one survived unscathed and it is in pretty good condition too. Only had about 30 minutes to hunt but I found this and a 1918 wheat penny so I am very pleased with the results. 20190904_114448.webp20190904_170254.webp20190904_170241.webp

Congrats then. You have amazing cleaning skills. Mine start like yours looked, but the more I clean, the worse they look.
Thanks! I ruined a few pennies trying to find a good method myself.
Thanks!
Congrats on the banner. What a nice find
Thanks!!
Amazing. Can you share your cleaning method with us ?
No problem. I try to rinse the penny off with my water spray bottle right after I dig them to keep the dirt from drying out. Then once home I soak them in vegetable oil for an hour or so. Then I take them out of oil but keep them nice and oiled up while I gently clean any crud off with a toothpick. Then I wipe it clean and dry with a microfiber cloth and voila! I may have to repeat process if it looks dirty still after first cleaning.
BOOOMMMMMMM BABYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!

Glad you were more careful digging this beaut , green patina is very nice .

Did you find yr other 1877 IH near the other ?
Detective Davers
Thanks! Me too!

Both were found at parks in Nebraska. But they were about 2 hours apart driving distance.

I love those IHP's, and finding an 1877 would be a thrill. Congrats!

Congrats on the find...so what is a conservative estimate of its value??

Awesome IHC. Congrats on the Banner find. Well done.

Congratulations

Thanks it sure was!

That is a good question for someone with more coin value experience than me lol. I have been told anywhere from $500-$1000 but no idea if that's accurate.
Awesome IHC. Congrats on the Banner find. Well done.
Thanks!!
Congratulations
Thanks!!

Congrats and 1000 pardons for not promptly casting my vote for your 1877 Indian Head. I feel like a bit of a shirker for not replying sooner especially as I made banner for recovering an 1877 Indian Head as well, except my coin isn't nearly as nice as what you found. Your coin is not only rare but it has incredible eye appeal. There is no corrosion so typical of dug coins - fantastic! Your recovery is all the more impressive as you overcame the set-back in scratching an 1877 IHP you previously found. Your post is a great motivator. :notworthy:

what did you do as far as cleaning? I have a few IHP that Im scared to mess with because I don't want to ruin them. Just posted an 1881 yesterday. That is a beautiful coin!! Great find!

Lol no problem at all. Thanks for the kind words. I was shocked at the condition as well. The indians do come out of the soil here in pretty good shape from what I have seen.
GORGEOUS!!!!
Thanks!
Wow great key date birthday find!
Thanks!!
GREAT COIN!!!!
Thanks!!

I soak my wheats and Indian heads in olive oil or canola oil then while still wet I carefully clean them with a toothpick. Then wipe them with microfiber towel. It has worked well for me. The soil in most areas around me is pretty kind to them as they usually dont have a lot of corrosion or flaking. Hope this helps.

Pennies would be the most common find you would think. The detector sure picks them up easily...how come after all these years of detecting 1850's to 1900 cabin sites I have never found a single one. RARELY find ANY coins. Odd really. I find all kinds of different things..not many coins. Detecting out west in gold rush country.

Great find, looks beautiful!

Can't believe I missed this post previously. I've never found an IHP, and that one.....just beautiful. Congratulations indeed.
