I knew I'd have 2 hours free time to detect on Sunday (2/17), from about noon to 2pm at which time I'd have to leave, clean up, and head to my mom's birthday party. I woke up to see it was 29 degrees and 30mph winds. I went outside with the dogs and said, "Grant, you have a sickness if you detect today." Well, I'm sick. I bundled up head to toe, and put on my new waterproof Helly Hansen rubberized pants. So worth the $22. I dare say I felt balmy and didn't even notice the wind. I went a few blocks away to a vacant house where my step-father is the real estate agent and had gained me permission. I've been once before and found a beer token and gas valve, but nothing much else. This day I would target the side and back yards, which had basked in the sun all week long. The soil was ideal. Soft and didn't fall apart.

On the side yard I gridded, and up the first past just found aluminum shards. Around my turn was a bush and I got a 12/29 and 12/30 on the CTX. It would ring 12/29 on the left swing, 12/30 on the right. So I dug. Out came a washer, NO! Square hole! Chinese coin? Yes, definitely looks like an old Chinese coin. Cool!

A few feet away I got more aluminum shards, a nickel, and then another Chinese coin! My first!

I started to wonder about migrant Chinese railroad workers and maybe this meant something to my town's history that I didn't know about, but then again, we're not on the west coast. Hmm...

About an hour in I looked up and saw 2 policemen. My first encounter with cops! "Whatcha doing?" I explained that I have permission etc., and they were really cool. A neighbor had called since the house had been vacant for so long and they saw me out there. Actually nice of the neighbor to be looking out. They left and wished me luck.

I wound up finding another Chinese coin before I set my sights on the back yard.

Got all the way up one side and then got a good signal. I popped the plug out and a GIANT coin stared me in the face, and I could clearly see a left-facing bust. George!! I gasped and fell back. I grabbed it and poured the rest of my bottled water over it to see it clearly. Not as old as I hoped but still very cool: 1916 King George V penny. A first for me:

I still couldn't get over the size of it. My alarm set for 2pm, I knew I had 15 minutes left. Probably enough to finish off the yard. Then I got a really messy hit... numbers jumped all around. Well, why not dig, right? Out pop 2 more Chinese coins on top of each other. My pro pointer was lighting up. Another Chinese coin! And another! Then a few nails, and then another coin! My first coin spill! I also retrieved a few small bullet shells from the same hole, which gave me a creepy feeling that perhaps there was a scuffle that led to the spill. My alarm started to sound. Crap! I have to go. Ug, still more in this hole! I managed to retrieve 12 more coins (15 total for the day) before I had to pack it up. Didn't want to but my mom's b-day party beckoned.

I will be back soon to retrieve the rest. I was able to ID the smaller one (I measured it at 22mm but this site has it as 23mm):
Ching Dynasty - Tao Kuang coins
Tao Kuang Coins (1821-1850 a.d.) - Obv.: Tao Kuang T'ung Pao; Rev.:
Right: Manchu Ciowan - The Board of Revenue mint, Peking
Left: Manchu Boo - coin

The larger coin I have measured at 23mm (so maybe it's 24mm)?

Other cool finds that I have to ID:

Vintage toy car, measures 3.75"

Cowboy on horse? Measures 1.75"

Toy train, oil tanker, measures 3.75:

Oh, and I saw a neighbor outside gathering all his garbage that was blowing around (not sure if same neighbor who contacted police). But I chitchatted with him a bit and he told me when he bought his house that he found a lot of railroad relics. He wound up going inside, and coming back out and giving me one of them! A vintage railroad insulator. Another first!

And finally, some misc finds from the day:

From the size of the casings next to the nickel I will venture they are .22 caliber longs and one .22 short. If they are center fire shells then you can fire me for messing up. I would guess that the Chinese coins came from the far east side of the house.

Did you get your hands good and clean before going to the birthday party? You had a good day detecting and I hope it was even better afterwards at the party. I suspect your 'Mom' is a touch younger than mine but spend good time with her every time you can. For her next birthday maybe take her detecting in her backyard and locate the nice gold necklace you've planted there (in a plastic bag) for her gift. Maybe a teeny tiny tag on it that says happy birthday mom!.

Other than it being colder than all get out, how's the learning going with the new gun, 3030?...........63bkpkr

I know you were joking, and I didn't think of it, but you're right... it was at the absolute far east side of the house!

I washed up nicely and we had a nice time. It was her 65th and her first birthday celebrated with my daughter (her new grand daughter) so it was indeed special.

I am really liking the CTX. While I still don't know what all the numbers mean (I'm learning) it's an absolute master at target separation. It picks up everything... even stuff buried under rusty nails, things close to each other, etc. I'm pretty much ignoring iron and nothing else. While I'm learning what foil, pull tabs, etc., are, I'm still digging since I'm not 100% confident, and I'm learning that I should dig those signals anyway because I'm finding good things! So, for every 5 pieces of foil or tabs, I'm finding a nice relic, so I don't mind digging them. I'm at the point where I'm going zero discrimination so I can listen for all the little bleeps amongst any noise. But if I get somewhere too junky I'll discrim out iron. I'm hoping with all the pull tabs, foil, and nickels I'm getting lately that gold is around the corner somewhere!

Nice hunt Grant. Looks like you hit the Chinatown jackpot! As you've already alluded to, some of those coins can be quite old.

Pretty neat looking finds. Kinda different. Good job. Glad you had a good day.

Thanks. I'm working on IDing the others. I have to clean them up a bit more so I can really make out the characters.

Very cool coin spill and story. I once had a sword and the hilt was made up of chinese coins. I wish I knew where it was now. Keep us updated on the dates. Happy Birthday Mom !!

Awesome finds and great story to go with it! I've had a few run ins with the 5-0, including bringing out the canines after they spotted the gun style bag in my parked car! But only once was I cuffed by a hot-head cop even though I wasn't breaking any law. I think he got his though... While he was busting me, someone walked into the K-mart up the road and walked out the front door with the entire gold earring display in a shopping cart!

Now that looks like a fun hunt. :icon_thumleft: Congrats on the cool Chinese coins, Canadian coin, and sweet relics. Love those toys. Good luck on another hunt there!

"Grant, you have a sickness if you detect today." Soooo true. And most of us would do it. But I would gladly go out in brisk weather for a find like that. Awesome find. HH

Thanks Neil. You guys in south and west Jersey have been killing it, so I'm glad I can represent some good finds in the northeast!

I can't believe you got cuffed. Some call me a wuss for not being brazen enough to detect where I don't have permission saying the worst that would happen is that I'd be asked to leave. Now I can cite your story as further reason :)

With 30mph wind gusts, I opted not to try out my new video cam, which I regret. And when I found the KGV I was so excited to see what it was I didn't capture the moment. Afterward I put it back in the hole to snap a pic. This is my sad recreation.

You followed a frustrating day at that location with a great day of misc. interesting finds--further proof that persistence pays off in all things and esp. this hobby. There's more there and I look forward to seeing it. Well done, my friend!

Nice digs Grant :icon_scratch: and all this time I thought North Jersey was completely paved over in concrete and asphalt ;) I like the toys , and "the Man " story ,, doin' their job, so that's ok .

That's something :icon_scratch: kind of weird ,, I call em' Chinese yen coins but their not :o I took a few that I dug to the local Chinese take out place for the chef to help id . He wanted them really bad so we figured out a deal ,, traded them for a large order of General Tso's chicken , fried rice , and two egg rolls a week for a month . He keeps asking if I found any more . Chinese coins do show up down here in South Jersey farm fields . Keep on rockin' , Northern style .

8-) dawg

Thanks... that's actually a really good idea for a source to help ID or decipher them! Next time I order takeout I'll bring them along. I'm in the process of gently cleaning and will snap pics with my usb microscope, so I think I'll be able to get really good detail.

do they take them at the Chinese buffet? I love that stuff. nice fine of coins. good use of two hours. did you give one to mom? good luck to you!!!!

I will, and with some urgency. I just found out that it may close at the end of the month! Luckily I've searched all of it except about 10 square feet, and the remainder of this started hole.

You need to get back out there. According to what I just read about Feng Shui you are supposed to bury THREE coins in Bamboo, or bury NINE coins at the south east corner of your foundation. Where did you say you found these? I'm thinking it isn't a coin spill, but purposely buried. There might be some more there.

Well, I found 12 of them at the north east corner, and 3 scattered about the rest of the yard. And I'm certain there's at least 1 more waiting for me.
