What's up guys, long time lurker decided to finally sign up. This is a great site and has provided tons of useful info on this crazy placer game we have here in CA. I moved here from Kentucky about 13 years ago and have been trying to figure this gold thing out since I've been here. With all of the rules and regs it's pretty difficult for a total noob to get started. I recently got into backpacking up here (Nevada County area) and can't help but think how much fun it would be to eventually backpack into a claim and hunt gold for a few days. The term noob in the title is an understatement to say the least. My placer experience is a total of 15 minutes on a borrowed small sluice box in the Washington area. So needless to say this intro comes with some questions, lol. Any and all advice for someone trying to get into this would be highly appreciated!
1. I found a "grid square" using mylandmatters.org that I am interested in. It shows a claim history in the grid square, but shows no active claims. Does this mean I am free to go prospect that location and then proceed with the claim process if I want?
2. If I am out backpacking and see no claim post am I free to do a little prospecting then or should I come home and verify the best I can that there is no claim in that location.
3. How can I find public land that is unclaimable?
