Dude treasure hunting is forbidden in Greece.

Indeed it is forbidden to treasure hunt in certain archeological sites for obvious reasons but if you have a very good piece of information you can dig legally under supervision of the authorities.

Tell me more. I live in Athens and I have some relatives in Thesalloniki.

Areas where I can hunt and what kind of permissions e.t.c. I need? What I know about the northwestern Greece is that there were Civil war battles there and of corse ancient Greek sites.

You can dig in any public land if you obtain permission from the local authorities. You can not dig in declared archeological sites for obvious reasons-and this is why laws are so strict here-and you can not dig in private land unless the owner agrees to participate and get a permission. The whole procedure costs however because you pay for all, licences etc, therefore you must have a very good piece of information before you start,a good degree of certainty, because you only dig in the specified spot for a certain period of time.
