The notch on the left side of it on the picture, could something have been attached to it?

It sure looks like a knockout but I dont remember ever seeing one that wasnt round. I guess you need to use an adapter or washer. : :icon_scratch: Would be glad to see one. I will do a search.

ADDED. I just thought of something. It could be a knockout for an element or something else but not for a wire connection. I agree with Nick its a knockout.

There is oval conduit similar to this ...

This is not an exact match but it's late ...
OK I follow you. I wonder what kind of locknut screws onto that?

Its PVC conduit. The knockout is for low voltage applications I guess, or for use as surface mount with a ground wire. :icon_thumright: They are always coming up with something new. Myself, I have never used them. Check the size here: http://www.exstockplastics.co.uk/catalogue/electrical/ovalconduit/

Personally, I would have said it was scrap from a cnc machine. Usually when the plasma cutter begins cutting it makes a slightly larger cut like you see on the left of the picture. It then cuts evenly all the way around the piece and moves on to the next programmed section.
