My Buddy In Idaho Posted These Pics On FB, He Found This Thing At A Flea Market.
He Says It Sounds Like There Is Something In It and It Appears To Have Some Sort Of Sand Dust Falling Out Of It.......

Yes, I agree with everyone in that it's a decorative ball generally displayed with several others in a bowl. Places like Pier 1 Imports currently carry these.

My take is this, it could be a root of a tree that was carved and the dirt could have been trapped in it explaining the sand or dust falling out of it.IMO but also just decorative.

There are several woodworker (wood turners) books where the 1st pic is an example of museum quality artwork.

Refer to 'New Masters of Wood Turning' by Martin & Wallace.

Similar quality artwork exhibited on the cover with a 6 page article.
