I decided to go to our local bank for some half dollars today. They told me that someone just brought in $340 worth of them so I figured it was someones dump. If it was, they missed 4 silvers.

They quite possibly could have missed them. I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to find silver just by looking at the rims. I can’t tell the difference on 40%. And I don’t do enough that I can’t check the dates on all of them so that’s what I do.

Nice silver on your first try. Hope you find many more silvers.

Good going Jaysix!

If it was a dump, they were a real amateur! Were they all from the same person?

Yep, the same person brought them all in at the same time.

Try sound checking the rolls. Basically act like the halves are poker chips and let them fall into one hand from the other... you'll hear the distinct difference... even if the rim looks clad. Works really well on the 40%.

I no longer trust my eyes and have to date check all halves whenever I get them. I look very close to the dime rims however, some might slip pass. Thank goodness dimes are all 90% and not 40's.
