I finally had the chance to get out and swing the coil , and swing the coil we did......Late this morning and just after the rain stopped my friend Jim gave me a call and said he had a few hours to get out and dig ( are you interested ) I said heck yea....We decided to go to a place that I have detected in the past and have found early Indian heads and a couple of large coppers.....Today turned out to be no different after a couple of hours and a few nice buckles and relics we had no coins ....so I told Jim I'm going to make my way back to the truck and get some water and change my battery pack...so as I made my way up this small hill I got a good hit right next to a fallen tree ( a small one) and only a few inches down out pops these two coins almost stuck together not being able to see what they were I just put them in my pocket and made my way to the truck....I honestly thought they were a couple of memorial cents dropped by some hunter since they were only a couple on inches down.....After a small break I walked ofer to Jim showed him and he said there 3 cent coppers , I said yea right .....and after looking they were!!! :) Now I have never found the copper version of the 3 cent piece so that was a first for me ( 2 times)....

Well we made our way back to that area and guess what , moving the small tree and a foot away another good hit .....Seated dime 1856!

now the day is looking better after no coins and getting chewed alive by flying bugs the first part of this hunt. As we continued Jim found an old pocket watch and another buckle.....I made my way back to the old cellar hole and moments later ( bam ) the detector was singing again , digging down 3 to 4 inches out came a coronet large cent . It is either an 1827 or 1817 the date is tough to read.....

As 4:00 came around and with plans for the evening we had to call it quits...The day turned out to be a good one with a couple of first for me and it proves once again that no site is hunted out....... Keep on Digging!!!!

Very cool, I wonder if someone had used them as buttons at one time..

Good finds,I agree that they where probly turned into buttons. nickel 3 centers at that.

very cool finds! Congrats! I am not very familiar with U.S. coins but I have never seen a copper 3 cent piece posted. I always thought you were only silver. I have a friend who found a silver one here a couple years back.

Congrats!

hi john , good to see you out hunting. Thanks for sharing

You call them coppers. Most call them 3c Nickels (since that is their metallic composition). But either way, they were made into buttons for clothing.

I have dug only one coin button, and it was a silver half dime with two holes.

Buck

You dont see many 3 cent nickels posted. I have only found one. Most people probably skip over them since they register low like a pull tab. Nice digs. :icon_thumright:

Awesome John...Congratulation's and I'm glad you were able to take your coil for a swing.Nice Job!!!

Pretty cool looking pair you managed there. :icon_thumright:

congrats! moving down branches and rolling dead logs always seems to pay of for me too.most detectorists go right around these objects.one big dead limb i dragged over netted a 3 large copper spill,.last hunt moving a branch gave up a 1723 woods hibernia.
they made both...3 cent nickel and silver compositions.

Nice coin digs !!! ..first dug 3 cent nickels , I ever saw . Usually see the tiny, silver 3 centers . They held up to nature , fairly well . Nice work and interesting button use for those coins . :icon_scratch: ??? ::) CMD

Nice old coins you found there ! looks like a great site ! Regarding the composition of these ,
they are referred to as three cent "nickels" they are in fact 75% copper - so the name 3 cent
coppers would be more accurate . As was mentioned earlier , a tiny silver version of the 3 cent
coin , pre-dated the so called nickel version . Argentium.

I've dug a couple big coppers that looked like they were turned into buttons, I think that's a pretty cool find in itself! Nice digs! :icon_thumright:

Great finds... I have never seen coins turned into buttons if that is what they did. Thanks for sharing.

What a way to turn that hunt around! :icon_pirat: Excellent hunting and finds, John!!

Nana :hello:

I talked to a few members and guys I go digging with....and they can't remember finding or knowing of anyone that have found the copper or nickle 3 cent pieces....They were a strange find and like I memtioned in the post, they hit like clad pennies so thats what I thought they were....lolol Thanks for the kind words!

Keep on Digging....John
