Hello all, once again we had a bit of time to get out before it really gets cold and snowy to dig another pit :hello2:
Started out at around 9:30 am with temps around 25 degrees :o Man was it cold. Good thing I just got a new jacket ;D I figured this one was going to be a bit deeper than the last few we did. For one it is right behind a big 2 story building that appeared to be built in the early 1900's. But there was a house there prior to that on the maps of 1893. So I know there is a really old pit in the yard area. It's just a matter of finding it. :icon_scratch:

Well we started out with a few unembossed medicines and utilitarian bottles. No big deal. Then we found a few local soda bottles that were not quite as old as we wanted. But what the heck it was keeping us warm as there was a fresh blanket of snow on the ground. >:( So we kept going and eventually saw a few broken chamber pots, and an occasional blob beer that was broken. We did manage two applied top crown beers which were nice. Also found a few Polish liniment bottles. They are kinda neat with alot of embossing on them. By now we were reaching the bottom which tapped out at around 9 to 10 feet deep. Yikes thats aways down there huh? ;D But thats the way we like em. Just wish there were a few more beer bottles in there but I am not complaining. It was fun and believe me I was sweating when I was down under :) It's quite warm in a pit that deep. The last picture shows most of the bottles we found. Nothing there to blow your socks off but what the heck, it was fun and we got a workout :tongue3: Okay check ya later and be safe out there. jgas

them are some sweet looking bottles!!!! i am envious.. MR TUFF

looks like you should get a long latter nice hole puts my little ones to shame nice finds jgas scott

is it me or does the 5 picture looks like a skull/face in the mud :o

Another worthy endeavor! I see a couple Pittsburgh bottles in the pictures; the one that says N.S. Pittsburgh probably refers to North Side, where the ballparks are now (and where I go to church). Until 1906, it was a separate city called Allegheny; Pittsburgh annexed it. From what I hear, there is a lot of privy digging going on down there.

Wow thats a haul there. I haven't done any privy digging but I hope to sometime this summer. A relative owns a property that dates to the 18th century with the original house still standing.

Do you guys reinforce your walls? I don't see anything in the pictures. You may want to consider it digging that deep.

now that's what i call gettin down n dirty :headbang: sweet bottles

Once again Jgas that is some serious diggn' you 2 have been doing.

Go any deeper and you may end up with a Ming Vase :laughing7:

Be safe

Thanks everyone for the great replies. Yep that sure looks like a skull in the pic.. :o

We have not reinforced the walls to date. We dig really safe like....I hope, so far it has worked. Believe me when I say that bottles are not worth being buried for prior to actually being dead ;D It was fun to do but I hope the next one is a bit more shallow. :tongue3: As always be safe out there. jgas
