Samuel Pepys wrote in his Diary for 22 January 1660 "This day I began to put on buckles to my shoes, which I have bought yesterday of Mr. Wotton."

These are not the ones that Samuel would have worn in 1660 as they are about 100 years, or so, later but I found them on back to back hunts the past two Sunday's. These are my first late 1700's "man sized" colonial shoe buckles and I love the "Nail Head and Rope Border" design on the larger one. colonial shoe buckle.webputilitarian buckle.webp

My hunting partner has found at least one (maybe more) of those 1600's buckles. I'm hoping that I find one someday. Beautiful buckle.

Beauty resto work. Nice job on the find and preservation

Thanks. Its one of my favorite colonial relics Ive found. Ive got early spectacle buckles and early two piece buckle frames but to get the complete chape too(even on later colonial buckles like yours) is not that common in my experience

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Those are really, really nice. My colonial sites are in plowed fields mainly so we get the smaller whole ones but none this big!

Beautiful buckles- Congrats!

BEAUTIFUL! :icon_thumright: ... Speaking of Pepy, I found a piece of Pepy's Series Currency the other day, which turns out to be a 1940s game token.

Beautiful buckle, congrats! :occasion14:

As a 1700's buckle appreciator I have to say that these are really nice! Congrats on two pieces of art!!! Two completes in two weekends?! Amazing!
