Went to a local rails and trails in houtzdale pa. Only went a few feet in and found this not sure what it could be. Its very shiny with yellow spots. I broke it in half and the pieces shard off like glass and the yellow parts almost look green.
 

Could be what got cleaned out from an old smelting furnace. I found some in PA when I used to trout fish in the Boiling Springs area.

Also found this on the same trail. First two picture is the whole piece. I broke it into 4 smaller pieces then. The inside is very sparkly and black. It has clear spots that look like some kind of crystal growth or something. I do not know to much about this kind of stuff but it is really neat.

I agree. Find it all over here in NW Pa. mostly in creeks where iron furnaces were. Always just called it "slag".

also could be from a glass insulator used along the rail lines
