metal detecting that is---

I love it. I will do it, but not with the passion I thought I would give the hobby.

I love beach detecting. I don't live near a beach....so relic, etc. hunting doesn't thrill me. Dug up so much scrap metal and pull tabs that the 'big treasure' just doesn't seem in reach or worth the time. (of course it is not all about treasure lol, it is about being outside and having fun)

hmm...just wondering has anyone had the same feelings?

I thought every weekend I would be out and about, and I was for a bit, then decided my other hobbies like riding horses etc would be spent more on that time.

So now I am thinking, vacation beach trips is great detect time for me and ENOUGH.....anyone else have these feelings? Enjoy but not the passion you thought it might be?

I hear what you are saying. I go through periods like that. I end up finding other things that I like to do just as much so I do them instead (hiking, shooting, etc.). That's probably pretty normal. It tends to go in phases for me as well.

Joining a club has helped me quite a bit. It makes me set aside time to go and hunt when I otherwise might get involved in other things.

Know exactly what you mean Farmer Chick. So many other activities the detecting has taken a back seat. Still pull it out once in a while but just not as enthused as I was when I first started. Maybe I need to find something really exciting to get the passion back.

I think some of our passion is derived from good and/or valuable finds. I hit a lull a few years ago and decided to "pay" for my detector before quitting all together. I got lucky! I did some research and found a great virgin spot. The research approach rekindled my passion, the finds keep it stoked. Having a passionate detectorist "helper" is a big plus as well. One that you trust, one that will help in the research, one that will keep lips sealed tight. I seldom "find" trashy spots now simply because I'm so far off the beaten path.

I like camping, fishing, arrowhead hunting, and metal detecting among other things, but luckily I can combine all those on one outing usually. I still get a big thrill out of diggin up a clad (which I probably better get used to I guess), so the hobby's never gotten old to me.

It will come and go, but you will pass an old property 100 or so times and keep wondering "what is there?" and finally you will stop, get permission, find a nice old silver coin and the addiction continues!

Now, before you give up, keep in mind you have a lower level machine. With any electronics, you pay for technology. So, if you're going to hunt an old farm, with LOTS of iron, you will either need to dig it all, of have the best of the best just to find SOME of the treasure.

There are plenty of old houses in Hickory, get permission and try your luck on an urban yard..... way less iron. I think you will find the passion again! :)

It's not all about the finds.....

It's the hunt....the chase... that keeps me here. (And most of all of us I would think)

It's the not knowing exactly what is at the other end of your shovel.... It's touching that piece of history, connecting with it, and imagining what it has seen, who has touched it...

Sure maybe you just find a old wheatie.... but still...

LOL it is good to read I am not alone
and no, I won't stop...that thrill of the hunt is enough to keep me engaged for sure.

phases...so true. things do go in phases for me. I see that. Well come Easter I hit the beach in Myrtle and I am sure I will go detecting crazy lol
:laughing7:

i bought my first detector almost 20 yrs ago, was really into it for a couple years then got side tracked with other things in life, only using it every now and then. then about a year ago my wifes uncle showed me a detector he bought which sparked my interest again and i pulled mine outa the closet and upgraded my detector by the end of the year. i like doing research about history so that also keeps my interest in the hobby. what seems to help me is when i do go detecting i never have any expectations of finding anything good so when i do find something decent it just makes the hobby more exciting. just remember its only a hobby and not your day job

I hear your cry for help, farmerchick...lol.....New places to hunt always helps to keep me going.

No Idea what your Talking about :icon_scratch:

Other Hobbies ? There are Other Hobbies :dontknow:

Don't give up go With the 10" coil for your detector .that will get you deeper were the good stuff is.Your detector is better than the a ace 2 fiddy,do research, hunt with some one that you can go and get the laughs with but don't give up.ask for permission to hunt in town.make thing for when go hunted like a home made pouch to put your finds in.

I know how you feel,Sometimes out in the desert looking for gold you just get tired. I worked my hands to the bone looking for gold.
It took a few years to ease up on having to find gold,I started to look at the hole trip,Exploring new places,The camp fire with friends,Meeting new friends that do what we do, The history of places we go.
When you put it all together we have a blast and I thank God we still have a country we can go out and do what we love to do.

I hear ya'll...don't give up at all!

I haven't had the detector out for a while, but with weather getting nicer, hmmm...it might be time to get out and hunt! Rusty nail? oh boy sure would be nice to add another to the pile :laughing7:

I was in the hobby then left because it was just too difficult to hunt in my home town (Miami). Too many restrictions at the time.

I moved elsewhere and am really happy to be back in the hobby.

I'm not getting out as much as I'd like to, but that's mostly my fault.

I work during the week when the parks and beaches are more deserted, and I don't like hunting when there's a ton of people around (the weekends). So I if i don't go hunting earlier in the morning, I usually don't go at all.

How can you say that on a metal detecting site :dontknow: Go back and look at the Today's Finds forum, then look for all of my posts  The only problem is that you will have to go back maybe 2 years for my post and it was only costume jewelry :laughing7: My better finds will be posed in the Everything Now forum :laughing7:

I still like to get out for the air, and if I find a bent penny, that will make my day. :headbang: I'm a bit too easy to please. :tongue3:
