The book where I had found the sketch that looked like me had many signatures written in quill and iron gaul ink. It looks like wrote their name to practice calligraphy, as a book mark or to indicate they read the book.
However, there were only two instances where a pencil was used: the sketch i mentioned and the sketch of the obelisk shown below.
Since the description of the vault is consist with period burial methods i researched obelisk. Obelisks as headstones became popular at the end of the 1700 as expeditions to revealed Egypts ancient history. Obelisks as monuments did not become popular until after the Civil War.
There are several Obelisks in the Buford family cemetery in montvale.
