nulling out iron

No,

I have dug targets at beach where I have a null and a tone, dug up piece of iron with the coin in same hole with my Sovereign.

Targets don't get masked on the XTerra in discriminate patterns. BUT, in Prospecting Mode, YES, targets will and do get masked when nulling iron. The signal blanks for a couple seconds, masking any good targets that are next to it.

that's what i thought, i read where it did this on the gt also. i thought someone just recently posted on this, but i think it was on the other forum where they said it was more of a problem with the gt. but what would make it do it in the prospect mode but not disc. also the gt does not have a prospect mode but they say it is more prominent on that machine.

NO!!! on the GT too.

When it nulls on iron it can also report on a ring or coin under the iron. You won't hear the null then, just the good target. When you scoop you might find iron trash in your scoop with the ring if water hunting. On land the iron can be on top of the goodie and you could dig up the iron and walk on not knowing there was something else there.

so is it just with the xterra as midas said?

There are lots of tiny pieces of iron on our beaches down here, I have no trouble with the Sov looking past the iron and seeing the real target beside it. Sometimes I have gotten a null and a tone while swinging the coil, when I dug I found the target and a tiny piece of iron as well.

Due to the beach sand being wet the hole sometimes caves in and becomes wider, 16-20 inches, so there is no way of my knowing if the little piece of iron I found is what nulled out orignally, or was just in the same area that I was digging.

Sandman and others know a lot more about this then I ever will, but I do know I have no fear of losing a target because the Sov nulled it out.

I always switch from my Excal to my Sov with the WOT coil if I'm not going to be in the water due to high surf. I can still work the shore line to about knee deep or slightly above, I just have to keep an eye out and be very careful a rouge wave does hit me. I wear the controls around my neck up high.

Question: if the detector nulls out, you don't dig the item. If you don't dig the item, how do you know if there was a good item missed that was next to it??

No not with the Sovereign

With the Sovereign,

if it's Next to it, This won't Happen as long as you swing Slow.

If the Good target is above it This won't happen if you work Slow.

If it is under a Large Iron Taget this Will Happen no matter how slow.

This is why I dig all Large Pieces of iron thar Null or Break up.

has anyone experienced where a target was masked because of it nulling out iron on the sovereign or xterra?

Yes, if you swing too fast the detector might still be in the null from a disc'ed target, but it's not the null that causes this, it's the detector not being able to keep up. I can only speak for the Explorer but swing speed is determined by the site. Most people I see have just one speed so they either haven't figured this out or their sites don't change like mine do. (from heavy iron to next to no iron, depending on the field)

The Double D Coil also has alot to do with this.
You can get alot better seperation.

comisoas that's exactly what i was wondering

Right, all the persons who said, "no", so quickly, how do they know? Have they dug all the null sounds to see if a goodie is hiding?? Perhaps, "They don't know what they're missin". I have a GT too and love the iron mask, but do not have enough experience to know yet. Bryan

When I first got my Excal, to learn it, I dug all tones and over 75% of the nulls, never once did a null turn out to be anything other then trash iron. I did the same thing with my Sov, I still do at times if I get bored hunting due to targets being far apart, or the null acts funny or strange. Never once has a null been anything but iron.

I had a hunting partner at beach using a PI, he would ask me to check a target he was digging, the Excal nulled it, he kept digging because he wanted to be sure, and every time it was iron. He traded the PI and got an Excal.
