Hoard of Anglo-Saxon treasure

Amateur treasure hunter Terry Herbert, shown here, found the largest-known hoard of Anglo-Saxon booty in a farmer's field this July in Staffordshire, England. The seventh-century hoard consists of more than 1,500 gold and silver items mostly associated with warfare such as helmet fragments and gold sword hilts. The hoard was excavated by the Birmingham University Archaeology Unit. Experts said the find, valued at $5.5 million, would revolutionize understanding of the Anglo-Saxons, a Germanic people who ruled England from the fifth century until the Norman conquest in 1066.
