I just ordered an AT Pro and am really looking forward to taking it out. I was wondering if anyone has advice on what is generally at various readings. For example, one person I talked to says that IH Pennies are always showing up at 76. I am pretty new and realize that there is no gospel when it comes to such things, but was wondering if there are some basics that I could start off with. I have researched a lot of comments and most people say it is a great detector to differentiate junk from non-junk and a good one to use in fairly trashy areas. I have an Ace 350 and although it is a good machine I dig tons of junk because either it does not discern good from bad really well or I can't discern it using the machine. Either may be the case. I am standing by eagerly for any advice. Thanks... Brad

I would suggest you hunt in pro mode, zero discrimination and set your iron discrimination to about 25. Start detecting and dig most stable signals with a nice reading in all 4 directions. It will take some time. To speed up your learning curve, build a test garden with multiple items like coins, bottle caps, pull tabs etc.

I found this:

I've had this list saved on my phone thinking I would use it but really, when I'm out detecting, I never think about it. Just dig it and see what it is. Lol

Also it depends on conditions, ground balance , minerals etc I have that VDI list and I find it is more practical to see what readings you get consistently on targets. For instant I know when I get 53 it's Nickel or pull tab, 75 is Zincoln, 81 a memorial, 83 wheat or Indian, 86 a dime or quarter and so on because I get the same readings all the time. Different coils will get different readings too and deeper depths will have lower readings then normal. I have had 2 silver rings come in at 67....you just never really know until you hear it, read it, dig it and see it.

I do dig aluminum and steel because I dig high tones first......that's why old bottle caps get's me fooled a lot, if it sounds good dig it.

Thanks, Chad. I hope you are doing well in Texas. I have a buddy that lives just west of Ft Worth and I know he has had tons of rain, luckily no tornadoes hit there....Brad

Yeah, it's raining again today here. I'm not hardcore enough to go swingin in the rain.

Going by the list provided may get your hopes up. I never got a 99 number until 3 days ago. As I am digging I am thinking silver dollar, come to papa. Turns out it was a huge washer. And I was in the vicinity of where I found the 2 seated dimes (which read 80 on my machine) It was still exciting though. The numbers are close but I suspect that they are different on each machine. I depend more on the tone than I do the numbers. I don't trust the numbers yet hence I dig a lot of aluminum and iron...d2

Actually I was out on some of my constant readings, Dime tends to be 83 and wheats about 77 (but a smoother tone then a normal penny). I have had 99 a few times and it is always for me big iron, a liberty Standing half dollar comes in at 88 to 92

The list above is a great guide to start with. Knowing these numbers, you will be able to see how they will defer sometimes. But the numbers above are about 70% right ..I only say this, because there is still times I dig memorial pennies that are reading in the quarter range (usally deep)

One thing I have noticed about deep wheats, is they will jump thru almost ALL the coin VDI numbers...I can predict a wheat about 90% of the time

Good Luck !! That Machine is a great machine!

Thanks for the list. New detectorist here in the San Antonio area and this helps. I run an AT Max...assuming the number should ring up about the same correct?
