Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I met a new neighbor yesterday and talked up metal detecting, of course. I was invited to detect and went there today. I found a Georgia quarter and a Virgin Mary medallion on the drive. Nearby, on a hillside , I found these pieces of obsidian. Nice. The other piece appears to be fossilized wood. Am I right?

TerryC, I had a couple hunks of Obsidian but gave on to Daughter. If you chip of a piece just right you will have one of sharpest cutting instruments known to man.
Thanks for your post.

Yes sir! I'm aware of that. I think it was the Mayas that grew an entire, powerful culture based on its obsidian mines. Made them very wealthy. ╦╦Ç

It appears the obsidian and pet wood, et al, were simply discarded there by the previous owner. I have since (today) found beautiful pieces of discarded pet wood cubes. ╦╦Ç

It is difficult to believe that "rock" above not wood, but is petrified wood. Along with it is a piece of obsidian with some rich browns included. Actually, I had to take a pic with the THIRTY TWO DOLLAR "scale cube" I recently purchased. The good ones are hard to find. ╦╦Ç

WOW! Very nice. My brother, TimC, Has collected bucketsful from AZ. 25 pounds at a time, of course. ╦╦Ç

Wow!! That's weird...my little brother's name is Tim, also. We named our oldest son, Tim.
