I had found this some time ago, thought Ide give you folks a shot at guessing. It is a round sphere ornate in the style of old bells ,metal design . found: near a revolutionary small skirmish upstate NY. brass clad. Iron inside? size of softball,8 lbs, near a foundation site.

Thanks to all , am still not sure, seems to heavy for smudge pot and can't find any gate weights like this so far. believe there were clips on either side near top to keep from spinning, and attached with fine chain.. but am not sure. so far gate weight is most plausible

looks like decorative fire pot / smudge pot

This was my first thought as well.
The design looks similar to Aztec or Inca, but I'm probably way of base with this theory. :dontknow:

Now that I've read "
believe there were clips on either side near top to keep from spinning, and attached with fine chain", maybe this was a weight for an oil lamp chandelier.
