Odd looking 1967 Quarter

Any suggestion as to why this quarter looks like this? Mind you it's a 1967 so no expecting silver, but the edge of the coin is silver in color throughout. It looks almost like a zipper on the edge. Thanks!

Coins that were used a lot in slot machines also would have the reeding wore off.

I've come across a few of these quarters as well, the edge being all silver.

I see the resemblance, but there is no brown coloration at all. Long time exposure to salt water?
