odd piece of metal.

Anyone have any ideas what this is? It is folded, but has a decorative part on it. Any ideas? It is old because of the patina. Any guesses?

Looks like a decorative metal part on a trunk. They had those things that decorated where the wood pieces joined, and also around the lock. Looks like it broke off by the straight edge (sorta) on the bottom.
