I found this back in March along side a mining railroad grade. I finally got it cleaned up as it had to wait its turn in the electrolysis tank as there were dozens of rusty items before it. I googled mining cars, but found nothing that looked like it. There is a brass thumb screw on it.

I have restored and recovered ore cars for nearly 20 years and have never seen one on any type of coal, tram and or ore car.

Creskol, it was along a coal mine tracks. They dug drift mines back in the hillsides to dig the coal out. I have found both mining and logging items at this area, but this looks to be more mining related then lumbering.

I know what this is. It is used to tighten down a lid to the top of a cast iron pot used in algamation. The pot was probably a gallon or two. Also used for a retort. The hooks on side hooked on the side of the pot and the screw tightened down on the top. A gasket made of asbestos was used. When heated they would or could create pressure. Also used for canning like a pressure cooker.

At least I think.
