You might get the impression that I am feeling a little joyful. Well, you’d be CORRECT SIR! Or Madame or.. well.. you get the picture I think. Two Straight days of GORGEOUSLY warm clear sunny weather here in my part of the country, and both on days off no less! And the best part about that? I GOT TO GO METAL DETECTING ONE OF THEM! <Dancing the Happy Dance>
Saturday I spent running errands and just spending time with my darling wife. A lunch date, some shopping, (groceries etc) and some household chores took up most of the day. One chore was inspecting and cleaning up as best I could the mess that the gas company made of my drive way Friday afternoon. They were working on a neighbor's service line across the street and for some reason had to dig up a connection that happens to be under my drive way. WHO KNEW? Anyway, I’ve got a five foot by three foot square cut out of my blacktopped drive that they conveniently filled back in with pea-gravel. That does nothing for the edges of the hole that look like gravel is erupting as if it were some stony volcano. Mud and dirt all over the rest of my drive and walk too. Of course I couldn’t complain about it Friday night, and their offices are closed for the weekend. The soonest I can talk to anyone (or try anyway) will be Tomorrow (Monday). Lord Help me! I’m going to try to find out if they intend to send someone back to smooth out and resurface the “HOLE” they made in the drive. I’m dreading the fight as much as the possible negative outcome. GRRRRRR.
SUNDAY (today) was an entirely different matter. Today I had no responsibilities or demands of my time. The weather was BEAUTIFUL again, and I had the blessings of my dear wife to “Go Play!” <smiling> So I DID!
I grabbed my phone, my finds bag, made sure my detector and other gear were in my truck and then headed out to “play”. It being an absolutely gorgeous day, with temps heading for the 60’s (still amazed about that), I knew that everyone and their brother would be headed to the local parks as soon as the morning frost was melted. I really didn’t feel like playing the pied piper today so I figured that I’d make the rounds at some of the Elementary Schools and search some tot-lots. I’ve been to most of the schools around and near my neighborhood... oh who am I kidding.. I’ve hit every school in this town of mine within the last three or four months, even with the snow and ice for the past month or so. Yeah, if it’s going to be school playgrounds, I’d have to go a bit further afield today, so I did. I went to one of the next towns over from my own. I just hopped on the interstate and cruised about 20 miles and began my Tour De Tot-Lot, De’Jour. (pardon my French).
Normally one isn’t likely to encounter any or at least “many” kiddies at the schools on a weekend. Of course some of the schools playgrounds are open to the surrounding neighborhoods and their children, so sometimes they still emerge out of the woodwork. I only encountered two today. Two very, annoyingly even, inquisitive youngsters that followed me from one end to the other while I searched the first playground. Their father was pretty much catatonic sitting on part of one of the jungle gyms dozing from the look of it, till he decided the boys had “played” long enough . Now they two boys weren’t really that bothersome, they never actually tried to help me dig anything or, like some have done, tried to “salt” the woodchips in front of me to see if I’d “find” their coin or whatever they just planted. <laughing> No, these guys just followed me around at a distance of about ten feet or so trying to talk to me. They tried to ask the usual questions like “Hey Mister!.. What’d you find?” “ Hey! Are you looking for gold?” “Can you find bones with that thing?”... <rolling eyes> Often, though it might seem rude to some folks, I’ve found the best way to deal with this kind of thing is to pretend you don’t hear them, I mean HEY! I’ve got earphones on.. I’m DEAF to the world.. or so they think. <chuckle>
Anyway, as I said “Dad” finally decided the boys had played long enough and rousted them back to the car and left. Probably a weekend custody kind of thing... *sigh* Well, now that my audience was gone I could devote more attention to the “treasures” I was finding. OH Yeah! There were treasures being found. Coins! Bling! All kinds of things. The “biggest” hit of the day was at the first school yard I hunted, after the boys left. It was a BIG signal on my detector and at first I thought I was just picking up a foot or leg of part of the playground equipment. I’m sure most or at least some of you out there can identify with that.. hunting around jugle gyms and playground equipment you get false reads from the metal legs, braces and underpinning of these things that are buried in the woodchips, sand or gravel that covers the tot-lot. Well this time I went back and checked that signal not twice, but three times and even then almost didn’t bother to dig it to investigate. But thankfully, I DID dig it. Check it out! A nice big Kennedy Half !!! <commencing the Happy Dance again>
Hey! 1971... wouldn’t that one still be mostly silver? <big smile>
I could have called it a day after that one school yard and been happy with my finds, but it was still early and still gorgeous and still Sunday, and I was still in that same town... that doesn’t get detected much if at all by anyone else. Yeah, I went to a second school yard.. and a third before the day was out. Both the second and third locations were just as productive as the first school, though no more Big coins were recovered. That’s not to say that there weren’t any more surprises in store for me though. I found more unusual or at least unexpected finds at these two schools as well. One, a foreign coin. Not that I’ve never found any foreign coins at other school yards, even other “Mexican” coins, but I’ve not found a Mexican coin this old before. Check it out.. a 1946 Ten Centavo coin.
1946.. LONG before the more recent devaluing of the currency .. probably not worth a red cent. <grin> Anyone have any ideas?
There was a little round dude that looks surprisingly like Mr. Pac Man on this token.. Not the first of these I’ve found over the years either.
I found a Steel Ball.. Ball bearing perhaps? And a pair of One Eyed Specs, some kid must have been in hot water over that loss. And there was the knife. To be sure, it was a TINY little knife, but it was STILL A KNIFE! You see, there is a zero tolerance policy in the schools here in Central Kentucky regarding knives, firearms and or any kind of weapons. Even though it was (is) TINY, someone was breaking the rules. The little rebel! I’ll bet he probably wears a leather jacket.. or diaper. <laughing>
.... Oh it’s SHARP too. I think I’ll just put this little blade in my truck.. in the ashtray , along with my spare change. Still though, it was a neat find, if a bit unusual for the school yards around here.
There was the usual kind of stuff that one might find in any playground recovered today too. Zipper pulls, buttons, snaps, safety pins and bling.
All junk I think, well, maybe not one piece. There were three little pendants dug up today, one that looked as if it was baked on enamel painted dog or bear wearing a hat or something. What do you see?
Anyone ever seen one of these anywhere? What is it? Stranger and stranger... you never know what you’re going to find with this hobby do you? How about this next find? This little key turned up under a dime signal, understandable as it’s barely big as a dime. It looks like no Master Lock key that I’ve ever seen before. A Lion on one side and company name and numbers on the back. Again.. anyone have any information on this find?
Oh there was the usual trash and rubbish to be found today, and WAS found today. Can’s, Can Slaw, Pull Tabs, and one find you don’t find much outside of school yard playgrounds... Pencil Erasure Heads (the metal barrel that holds the erasure to the pencile) They ring up loud and clear in the nickel range, stronger even than pull tabs. But hey.. you have to dig them up or chance missing a, well, nickel, or something better. So dig them I did.
Fortunately all to be found was not junk or trash. The School yards were generous today in the coin department. You could say that My gas was covered by the clad found today... as well as my lunch (frugal) and a soda for the drive home!
Yeah, thirteen bucks more than covered expenses today. But even with the nice haul on coins, I had even more fun actually doing the hunting. Oh it was a VERY good day! So I’m still singing and dancing..
