greetings all. Here are a few pics. of some bone beads,a fishhook & a triangle point that I found close to where dorkfish has been finding his wonderful artifacts.I have a few more that I will post later. thanks for looking.

How can these bones survive in the ground for several hundred years. And show so little wear?

Monk...The artifacts that paleojoe is finding look to be Mississippian and date from about 1300 BP to 400 BP.
The sites that they are found on frequently have an abundance of clam/mussel shells that made up a large part of their diet, these shells over a period of time tend to neutralize the soil acids and help to preserve the bone objects.
If the objects were worn, ( Beads or Hair Pins) or pieces used as tools such as awls and fish hooks, the polish from use or intentional, helps to preserve them even more, due to closing the pores of the bone. Sites that are well drained tend to have better bone preservation also. Some of the more polished pieces almost look like plastic.

Just wonderin from one Buckeye to another ,what part of Ohio? Are you huntin near Wheelersburg?I,m in Brown County.

Jeff,this site is located about 7 miles north of Portsmouth. I do quite a bit of hunting in wheelersburg.With all the rain this year there is very few fields plowed yet.As late as it is in the season,they will probably just run a disc over it and plant it. If you ever get down this way let me know. Maybe we can get together and find some artifacts.

Paleojoe is right, most of the fields that are getting turned this week are just geeting a disc run through them and then they are being planted. I saw quite a few today on my way to work that were getting this treatment. If we get some good rain here in the next week or so we can probably get into them and maybe find a few pieces before the crops get up to high.

I guess we'll always have the site Joe first mentioned where we find all kinds of Ft Ancient artifacts since there is an on going excavation at the site and we are allowed to surface hunt the dirt piles they throw behind them.

Here's a couple of trays I've filled up in the last year or so.
