Looks like a early 1900s great seal button to me. nice find.

It's a military general service button C-1901 - 1920. The company that made it went out of business in 1920 so it's more than likely an early one. American Button Co.

The American Button Co. of Newark, New Jersey existed from 1903 until 1920, when it was purchased by the Waterbury Button Co. However, most, if not all, buttons bearing this backmark date no later than 1917, when there was a major fire at the factory. quote PBK of TN
