Ok folks..lets see your favorite find/finds for this year..I'll start it off....

1856 half dime was fun to find at Hillsdale fairgrounds.

Plus my favorite for this year is this cool civil war patriotic token found with some new friends at a group hunt.

Nice ones Jim. I remember when you dug that token on the group hunt. At the time I was like "huh?" I didn't realize coins and tokens of that age could be found.
These are some of my favorites from my first full year of detecting. I love the mercury dimes and seems they are more common then the silver Roosevelts. I listed some of my silver because thats what I truly relish. Out of 7 indians the 1864 is the best and my favorite. Also managed to find a couple elusive silver Washingtons.

Hey Duane, check that 64 Indian out real good. From the pic it looks like it may have the pointed bust. Check and see if you can see an "L" in the ribon. If so you got a rare one there. Worth some moola. I sold the one I found for around $200. The reason I mention what I sold some of my dug coins for is to let others know that they can be worth quite a bit of money even all dirty and green.
Great nabs by the way, just missed a seated quarter by one year. In my 10 years of detecting I never found a seated quarter. Some day. Just wait til next year Duane. You'll have a nice pile. Jim

Those are excellent finds that Jim and Duane have gotten this year,I was fortunate to have been with Jim when he dug that awesome token and better yet to have met the both of these great guys! Its pretty hard for me to really pick out just on favorite find, I have been blessed this year and have found alot of very nice coins and tokens, but if I had to narrow it down I think the 2 half dimes I found this year would have to be my favorites. They are so incredibly small and hard to get, you have to be really lucky and on top of your game to nail those little guys! Heres pics of the 1854 seated liberty half dime, and my very favorite....1831 cap bust half dime.

That bust half dime is a SUPER find. Not many of those to find in the ground. That seated half dime is in great condition. It was fun meeting you too Jack. Very nice of you to take us to some of your spots. What a guy. Like I have stated before, you have years of great finds ahead of you in your cool old town. Jim

Re: Ok folks..lets see your favorite find/finds for this year..I'll start it off....

I just started metal detecting this year in June. Spent about a month using a bounty hunter, then upgraded to a DFX and then to a Minelab SE. I found some good coins with the DFX but seem to be more consistent with the SE. Anyway, I put my favorites in this display case and if I chose the best 5 out of the bunch, I would say the two large cents (1847 and 1852), two seated dimes (1854 and 1877) and my latest find, a key date 1871 IHP. I hunted with Jack this year some and got to watch him pull out a large cent on one of the hunts. As for relics, I can't really pick a favorite there although I found a very old cast toy gun that might be from the 1800's. Found a decent amount of tokens this year also and like them almost as much as the coins.

awesum collections guys, i will post my stuff later

a lot of those coins look real good, these are the posts that make it all worth it, i have a friend of mine tha collects coins and he keeps asking me "what ya want for that one" he seems to be in amazement when i keep telling him that none of my stuff is for sale.

I guess I am too proud of my finds to part with any of them... I told him to get off his ass and come find his own

Hey 365 those shield nickels are hard to come by. I have only found a few in 10 years of detected. Congrats.

Hey hanger, nice collection. Cool display too. Hang out with Jack and you'll keep getting those oldies. Looks like ya may of over cleaned those large cents but hey they are yours and you can clean em how ya want to. Congrats. Jim

Re: Ok folks..lets see your favorite find/finds for this year..I'll start it off....

Yeah Jim, I probably did overclean the large cents but I don't plan on selling any of my coins unless I get doubles of a valuable coin. BTW, that is a pretty sweet token you found there. The display case is meant for arrowheads and ultimately probably will become used for that, but for now sets off the coins well. Hopefully next year, a case like that will be way too small for the finds. HH

Re: Ok folks..lets see your favorite find/finds for this year..I'll start it off....

Well my find isn't as great as some of the others on here, but it is my best find because it is my first 1800's token/coin. It is an 1832 Province of Nova Scotia 'thistle' token I found at a farm in Portland.

Re: Ok folks..lets see your favorite find/finds for this year..I'll start it off....

These are my big silvers for 2008

Fav1.webp

This compass is my favorite relic find for 2008, it was on a steep hill in the woods down about 5 inches in peat type soil, it still works great.

Fav2.webp

This is my favorite token of the year and it was down about 8 inches in the same woods I found the silver dollars and compass.

Fav3.webp

All of these finds except for the Barber half and Seated half were found in Kleinstuck Preserver right here in Kalamazoo, it's 50 acres of woods and bog owned by Western Michigan University. The man in charge of the grounds (WMU) doesn't have a problem with detectorists, just don't leave holes. I found the seated half in Upjohn park here in Kalamazoo where they completely revamped the entire park and dirt from the entire park was all moved and shuffled around throughout the entire park so here's a couple spots y'all can try if you get around this area. There's a lot of coins in Upjohn park that are now within detector range so next year I'll be hitting it hard.

Great finds Giant!! I never found a silver dollar in my years of detecting. My friend Troy who I got into this hobby a few years back found 3 of em already. Go figure. Congrats on those great finds and I really love the token and the seated half. Jim

I started detecting in 89 and these are the first two that I've found, I found the Canadian dollar and a barber dime one day and the next hunt I was only about 100 feet from where I found the Canadian when I found the Morgan and I also found another barber dime the same day I found the Morgan. The Morgan was just under the leaves and the Canadian was about 4 inches deep! It just don't figure, I honestly think moles might bring them big darn (to them) hunks of metal to the surface.
