Yeah she knew it was there you could see right through the bag and the box is clearly marked OLD GUN and Colt unasembled $40.00 . Its a 38 cal. The serial number is low 60000 which I think dates it as 1865. The trigger and wedge are in the box I just put the barrel on for the picture.

What a stroke of luck! Great old gun and looks like it's original too. Monty

Christmas came early

Fossis.................

wow Now thats a Christmas present

AHH, man, what a great piece of history that is. Congrats That is one of those gifts that caries "pride of ownership"
along with it, and is to be passed on down.

Nice old revolver!

Just goes to show, one person's junk may be another's treasure.

Good for you!

and she probably feels better now that it's gone, too!

Now that is awsome! :o

Super find! Not only and old Colt, but an old Cap and Ball Colt that has been converted to cartridges. That is an expensive piece of iron you have. Find a quality collector and have it authenticated, or better yet, write to Colt Industries with the serial number. I believe for a small fee they will give you the history and provenance on the piece. Again, Great find!

Why am I not ever blessed with this type of luck? What ever you are doing -keep it up.
Joe

I cross posted one of the pics to a collector site I visit. These conversions were made by Thuer,Richards, Richards-Mason. The most usually converted were US Navy 1851 and 1861 conversions and 1862 police and pocket Navy conversions. There was also a Colt factory 1871-72 open top revolver. Hopefully I can get you a ballpark figure in a couple of days.n On general view though, if it is a gen-u-wine conversion colt, the value will range between 2500 hundred to 7500 hundred. See if you can post some pics of the barrel markings and frame markings, and barrel length.

Here are some pics of the markings. The barrel length is 7 1/2 inches. Thanks for all your help.

You may also want to drop this gent a line. Jim Supica of NRA National Firearms Museum. Jim is an expert on these. http://armchairgunshow.com/index.htm

Also, found this on www.proofhouse.com/colt

Model 1851 Navy Colt, Conversion by Colt

Circa 1872. Calibers .38 rim fire & center fire, serials from 1-3800 and from ranges with in 41000-91000.

Total production about 3,800. That puts your 60,000 serial number in the ball park.
