Found this is some Old farm land dating back to 1600s. I’m guess brass. Never dug something like it any clues? 18D2A0BE-C2C8-4131-9B75-B62605F0B88A.webpF5463CB9-5FFF-4B75-8D43-562969D858DD.webp668FEE0E-99EB-4FA0-8D39-18A5D574C76F.webp94B630C6-4CF9-4751-8509-DA8CC146E92C.webp

I would not be drawn to thinking it was a gun part. But, on the other hand, I'm not sure what it might be.

You're be wrong as well, you can clearly see where the semi-circular guard broke off.

Hmmm... perhaps another look is in order.

I guess it might "pass" for a guard... might be onto something.

Originally I was thinking it resembled a Victorian sash lock.

not symmetrical so cant see a blade guard. Looks like a sash lock but opposite point from thumb piece would get in the way of mating piece? Gas light valve handle? but the cam part doesn't jive.

It is a guard, 100% sure, hence the rectangular hole for the tang. I've seen this type complete, unlike many others I don't need to search for pictures that may or may not exist. I'll leave that to others. The ID is there, just needs a date range, which I think is late 18th C??

It is pretty cool, I get very few pieces like it (ie weapon related) & it would be a welcome addition to any collection.
