Old brass Monkeys?

Picked up this pair of brass monkeys at a sale today, I was kinda hoping they were some kind of antique buckles or something else interesting. Maybe they are for hanging plants? If you know or just have any ideas I'd love to hear it.

These are widely recognized as plant hooks.

But the old guys here (most of us) know they are "one-time-use" thermometers. To check to see how cold it is. Yours, apparently, have already been used. :laughing7:

could they be cast iron? i have seen barrel full of monkeys game with them in it..
anyone remember the game or am i that old

Already threw them up on the bay for sale...and I was thinking ancient Chinese artifacts. Maybe next time.
