Some type of buckle?? Age? Musket ball for size reference. Found at 1700s house site

It looks like a 1920’s -30’s Hickok type buckle that would have a monogram in the box on front. The parts that were usually marked as such seem to have gone missing, but the loop is often marked “bronze”, like here: http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/25979-hickok-plate-f-buckle.html
