I found this in a tunnel system in Gibraltar.

Looks like a type of cylinder.

On the underside there is a pin that goes in as you push it.

The cylinder seems very solid and is very heavy.

Grateful for identification.

Thanks.

Looks like a bomb....be careful !!

Thats really strange.... if it is a bomb, could it be some kind of parachute bomb?

Maybe a type of sounding weight or sounding apparatus similar to this one?

How about better pics of that nose end? Perhaps if you cleaned it up more, some lettering may be visible.

I doubt it cos it's got a sort of handle

Could be.. who knows. The tunnels were dug for the housing of large petrol tanks.. so perhaps the weight could have been used for measurement??

Perhaps.. who knows but unlikely as the handle is on the top of the cylinder.. the "wings" are on the bottom so this wouldn't seem like very aerodynamically efficient. I think that the "wings" at the base is for support on a hard surface

Looks like the sides have knurling machined into the sides so one could get a grip to unscrew it. Does it have a seam?

Crack the very top valve open, then grip the knurled upper and lower sections and turn in opposite directions, this will start the mixing of the two chemical agents and start the timed release of the resulting nerve agent. Be sure to evacuate the area, it's deadly.

The wire bail on top will allow you to toss it or tie a string to it and lower it down into a bunker or cavern were the enemy may be holed up.

I've looked at examples but look quite different to what I have

Your imagination is quite good...

Is the piece brass? It looks part of a pressure relief valve used in heavy duty pumps and sometimes steam lines. Do you know if there ever pumps or steam machinery used in the tunnels?

You might be right... The tunnels were dug for the purpose of housing petrol/ pumping petrol from ships
