I'm new here and was wondering what do you say to the home owner of an old farmhouse that you want to detect?
Is one approach better than another? I have many 200 plus year old farms in my area and would love to detect them.

I guess you just try different approaches until you find one that works for you.
I always try to stress that MDing is my hobby, that I'm not a "Treasure Hunter". I also say that they will not know I was there after I am gone, as regards plugs and cleaning up. And lastly, I tell the owner that I will gladly show them any finds and they can keep what they want. I've found that most folks like to see the items, but usually aren't interested in keeping anything.
Just be personable and honest. Most people react well to that.
