Gates county is in Northeastern NC next to Dismal Swamp between Suffolk va and Edenton nc
My wife's families farm ( about 900 acres)
I have original survey of home farm dated 1835

900 acres!!!! You lucky dog.
We lived in Cary, and I worked in Wake Forest for 20 years. That whole area just grew so much since we moved there in 1992. We moved to Hendersonville in 2012.

It's actually 4 farms but they are all within 20 mile radius and have had people living on them since before civil war! I sure wish I had taken this up earlier in life...lol ( I'm turning 60 this year )

Nice button, if it was me, wouldn't do much to it, fear of losing some of that gilt on the back. Looks fine as is I think.

CLR or lemon juice will clean it up real nice and leave the gold gilt on there. Nice find!

Nice pre-Civil War button. William H. Jones operated from Waterbury, CT between 1835-1840.

It does got a very cool look
I don't know if it has some artifact value in its as found state
But
If I was Guna clean it, a tumbler with steel shot (water & soap)works great and doesn't take long. Most jewelers got one. sometimes works miracles in my experience. That and a gentle tooth brush with many applications... A a liquid dip polish can also work great. Depending what you want to do with it realy.

Was able to clean button up with brass brush and soapy distilled water
