Hi mojjax:

Not sure about the cylinder/glass object but the round shiny flat thing is a Mercury dime!

Sorry, couldn't resist. My wife always said I'm a smart-a__. Plus I'm frustrated because its rained steady for the last three days and the forecast says no break until Thursday.

I worked in a chemistry lab and some of the more dangerous things(chemicals) came in little breakable ampules. This does look like a glass ampule most likely morphine.

Very cool find! Can it be dated to the Civil War period? Was it found in an area of engagement?

I found it here in Maine . I don't think there were any battles up here . I wonder where the northern most engagement took place ?

The"St. Albans Raid" in Vermont is reputed to be the northernmost C.W. action by the C.S.A.

A contender for the honors is a bank robbery in Calais,Maine.

Both of my grandfathers were doctors, sure looks like a medical bottle to me.

If it is a morphine ampule, then it wouldn't be any older than the Civil War era.I believe the hypodermic needle was introduced during the Civil War.It would be considered rare I would think, as pain meds and anesthetics were hard to come by during the war.Opium on the other hand was much more abundant. The one end looks like a typical ampule, the little cork on the other end has me wondering.Interesting find, still undecided.

There is a cork on the big end . The other end is tapered , kind of like an eye dropper , except
bigger .

Well, whatever was in the vial was considered important as it was protected by the metal sheath. If morphine perhaps it was hidden by and addict for further use and forgotten where it was buried? You're limited only by your imagination on this one. Monty
