Any ideas of what it might be would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone. I don't think it's a cufflink though. It does have a shank like a button .
But it almost looks like one of those things that a Christmas ornament hangs from. AARC, the tip about the jewelry maker I think probably fits right in. I can't find a general website or wiki page about him though.
