old gun part?

I found this about 20 years ago with my first medal detector - a 79 dollar Radio Shack - I didn't find many coins with it , but I did find this brass thing next to an old foundation of a one room schoolhouse . Now that I have better equipment , I think I'll go back to the place and look for more this spring .
I think it's a trigger guard from a rifle . I was wondering if anyone knows what type or model .I can't find any markings on it .Thanks

It appears to be of the style found on a Hawken style muzzleloader. The little ring was for the little finger. The styles vary from rifle and manufacturer.
