The long upper and lower tang and the notch for the bolt look like a Japanese type 38 Arisaka. Barrel is short and bolt handle cut off.

Not a Mauser or Arisaka. Was some type of full automatic weapon. The bolt is fully open to the rear, that rounded knob sticking straight up is to manually pull the bolt back and/or again to slightly pull it back to unlock it after the bolt locked back after firing last round and new belt of ammo inserted than release that knob for the bolt to fly back home.

What a really cool find, congrats. I personally could not have left such a treasure behind.

Arisaka looks pretty good. Heavily modified if it is, some other type of Mauser action if it isn't. Nothing about it looks belt-fed to me.

Type 38 action.
Looks you are on to something there David. I've never owned an Arisaka but have handled a few briefly in gun shops. Sorry op for my previous comment. I just didn't recognize one that naked I guess.
