I recently got a hold of some old maps of my area and found where some old houses used to set. I headed out to the area only to find that it is severely grown up and has been turned in to four wheeler trails and a beer can dump. The bad part is, all signs of the houses are gone, no foundation or anything. So, disgusted I go back home to review the maps I had been given and I'm glad I did. The houses appeared on one map that was dated 1865 and when I looked at a map of the same exact area that was dated 1873, they were gone. So I figured that since they had been gone for such a long time, maybe there would be no evidence of them being there unless it's dug up.

I returned for a short hunt the other day and found a few things that led me to believe that this was in-fact an old house site, but I can't really identify these items and I was wondering if you guys could give me hand and let me know what I've got and if this site is worth a return visit.

I know the one is a pocket knife, just not sure of how old it may be.

Also found some glass...

I know these aren't as old as the houses on the maps, but they were found down the trail from the site on a hill side. I'm curious as to how old these may be and if it would be worth my time to see if there is anymore there like a bottle dump or something..

Any help you guys can give me would be great...

Sounds like you had a bit of adventure.
Any day outdoors is a good day.

I have no idea what the pieces of metal are, but it looks like there is a nickel next to 3 of them, Ha ha ha.
Honestly it is going to be hard to know what exactly these pieces are in this condition.

I'm sure other forum members will offer more insight.

As far as the bottles, I believe the 2 smaller ones might be medicinal bottles.
One looks to be embossed with info, the other is Cobalt blue.
If I remember correctly most of the 'Snake Oil' or 'Elixirs' were sold in these small bottles.
I think you will have to dig into some bottle books to find out the heritage on them.
The larger bottle might be the oldest, as it does not appear to have threads for a screw on cap.
Unfortunately the chip in it removes most of it's value.

I'm sure others will offer more comments.

Happy Hunting!

Thanks for the info, I'll have to try and clean the metal objects up a little bit better. The one bottle the has writing on it that you mentioned actually says "Listerine Lambert Pharmacal Co." on it.I probably should have mentioned that in my original post. Hope this helps with coming up with the age of the bottle.

This appears to be part of a bicycle wheel axle, or a similar small axle/shaft bearing assembly, you can still see the ball bearings, hard to tell how old it is

This, as you probably know by the name on it is a Listerine mouthwash bottle, this type was in use in the after the 1920s and up to the mid 1950s era, the earlier Listerine bottles didn't have screw-on caps.

Cool. Thanks for the info. never thought about a piece of a bike, makes sense considering you can still see ball bearings inside.

Just a note on the Listerine bottle after 1955 Lambert merged with Warner-Hudnut company and was know as the Warner Lambert Pharmaceutical Company, so you know that the bottle is at least from 1955 or earlier.

Cool. I looked up the Lambert company but didn't know about the merger. I'll be honest, some of you guys impress the heck out of me with your investigative skills on the computer and would love to learn the same.

It mostly a matter of the correct keyword/s when doing a search (in this case I use "Listerine" and "bottles"), if the info is out there on the internet, then it just a matter of checking most of the relevant hits of the search results and hope you find what your looking for.

Too help narrow down the filed of hits when doing a search put the keyword/s in quotation marks and you will not get other hits on other types of bottles, just Listerine bottles.

Never knew the trick with the quotation marks. I'll definitely give that a try the next time I need to do some research. Thanks for all the info you've given, it's been more than helpful...

I think the bearings are from the recoil (rope) off a small engine ... lawn mower for example................................

I think the third picture is a pocket knife.

The first one looks like a snap hook missing the spring loaded thumb release.
