Old large hook found in very small creek

[Lexicon Devil]

This large hook was found in a creek which only about 2 inches deep, you know, those little trickles that kids play in. There was no reason a hook of this size could be used in such a small creek. The tip is still sharp and where the eye hole would be a wider tip. Any ideas?

Perhaps, it was discarded into the creek as an unwanted or unneeded item. We sure find a lot of out of place items in our waterways down here.
