Hi there, Found this lead seal at a old Church site , its a Rare find for around here and I am not to sure of its age. I asking any one out there if they have any additional info that I can use before i record this and file it away. There is some markings on it as what is
shown in the photo's "HALL OF HOPS" ,ect , a possible date or address of 1817 on the rim that is hard to make out. I dont think that this seal dates back that far. The area that it was found is a HBC site and has paid of with a few good relics.

PS: the dog is my Newfoundlander, 4 months old and half grown.

Yep...definitely a lead seal...prolly mid to late 1800s. Nice find...I really like finding these seals.

Hi Hardy nice find

Cool seal...hey look it's Casper floating on your dog's chest ;D

Nice finds. Were they used for keeping the corks in bottles? Great looking dog. Newfies get pretty big, whats it weight at 4 months?

Very nice lead seal. I always like finding those

Hardy - I tried to sharpen up the pics a little - hope this helps a little. The "front" is hard to make out - is that a "Gryphon" in the middle? The "back looks like it says, "BALL FOR (HOPS or BOPS :icon_scratch:) AT...

Hello Hardy, very nice find, I really enjoy pulling up a lead seal and I have hundreds of them! I could not make out the date of 1817 but it is very probable that it is from 1817, they are rarely dated but some are, I have very few with dates. I am a little confused about the seal with English writing on it, of course Hops are a major ingredient for beer. However, what confuses me is the rampant lion with the funny tail, my oldest coin find in my area of 1320ish has the same rampant lion on it and it comes from Bohemia or Prague Czechoslovakia. They still use the same rampant lion on their coinage after 700 years. If you do not know, it is a bag seal, probably from a very large burlap bag full of Hops, probably imported from Europe to where ever you are. Trade makes the world go round. I would consider your find very rare. Do a search on Czechoslovakian coinage and you will see the same rampant lion. Hope this helps you ID it. HH, Mike

THANKS TO BAVARIA MIKE AND DD-777 FOR THE GREAT HELP WITH THE LEAD SEAL , THE SPOT I FOUND IT AT IS A HUDSONS BAY CO. LONG BOAT STOPING SITE. CARGO WOULD BE UNLOADED AT THIS SITE AND TRANFERED TO OAX CARTS TO CONTINUE TO THE RED RIVER SETTLEMENTS IN WHAT ONCE WAS KNOWN AS RUPERTS LAND DURRING THE FUR TRADE.

I WILL STUDY A LOT MORE ON THIS SEAL AS THIS WOULD BE A VERY VERY VERY GREAT HISTORICAL FIND FOR MY AREA IN REGARDS TO SHIPMENT OF GOODS TO RUPERTS LAND , NOW KNOWN AS MANITOBA CANADA :icon_sunny:

THE NEWFIE IS AT THE MOMENT ONLY 45 LBS , SHE WILL GET UP TO 120 + LBS.

HI NANA AND ROMEO AND ALL THAT REPLY TO THIS POST. WILL UPDATE IF NEED BE :icon_study: ;D

Hey Hardy, here is a Czechoslovakian coin from the year 2000. The rampant lion has gone through a few minor changes but is very much the same as it was nearly 700 years ago. Czech will soon join the European Union in the next few years and I hope they get to keep the lion on their Euro coinage. They were once a world power but have been reduced to nearly a second world country due to the raping and oppression of Russian rule and communism. They are coming back slowly. I had the privilege of touring Czech border towns before the wall came down, after the wall came down and several times since in the past few years. Vast improvements are happening. Imagine if you could find a trash dump from the early days, it would be a gold mine of history for you! French and world wide relics of the 1700-1800s would come up. HH, Mike

THANKS MIKE , I NOTICED ON THE SEAL THAT THE RAMPANT LION HAS A SHIELD ON ITS SHOULDER THAT IS NOT VERY VISABLE ON THE PICS , DO YOU HAVE ANY COINAGE WITH A LION AND A SHIELD ON ITS SHOULDER ?? i WILL TRY TO GET A PIC OF IT AS SOON AS I GET A BETTER LENS ON THE CAMERA. :icon_study: :icon_study:

Re: old ? lead seal, any ideas ?? WE HAVE A PUZZLE

MIKE AND ALL, THE LETTERING ON THE LIONS SIDE OF THE SEAL IS AS FOLLOW........YL REJNA..ZHAUMRO?...ELE 161N (THE 6 IS BACKWARDS) REVERSE SIDE.. ....HALL FOR HOPS AT ROUD????... THE QUESTION MARKS ARE FOR LETTERS THAT ARE OBSQUERED OR HAVE FALLEN OFF. THERE ARE MORE LETTERING THAT IS CUT IN HALF WHEN THE SEAL WAS CRIMPED.
