Hi,

I have added this old walking stick to my small collection of sticks and militaria.
Hoping someone might be able to offer some details/knowledge regarding the inscription.

It reads
"Presented to
S? Sgt W.Green
By Com & Non Com
Officers
Dudley
Companies
1908"

Not sure if the first part is "S.Sgt W. Green" or just "Sgt W. Green

Again apologies for the poor photo. The stick itself is horn handle, some kind of black wood, and sterling silver.

And thanks in advance for any help

I'd say it looks like there was an S. there (I see the dot too). It seems worn similarly to the C in Com below it. So I'd say he was a staff sgt, which would be a rank I might expect to see something presented to.

nhbenz is right about the rank of Staff Sgt. Dudley Companies would be from Dudley, New South Wales I'd think. That's a really cool find seeing as the Commonwealth came into being just 7 years earlier. There's a good chance your man could have seen service in the Boer War and maybe WW1 with the ANZACS.

I would imagine you could look through the archives and find his service records and possibly a photo which would go really well with that stick.

Is it a walking stick or a swagger stick? A walking stick would be a staff, as in it would be long enough to use for support while walking. A swagger stick is more like a riding crop and were part of the uniform for non-coms of the british empire army until WW2 when they fell out of style.
