While trout fishing last week I spotted an old looking cellar hole. it was on the far side of the creek with no way to get there other than wading across I knew it was going to be a virgin site. when I got home I did some research found out that it was very old and that it was abandoned in the late 18 hundreds. fast forward to today I show up with my detector and my waders and I find out that last night storm has made the creek rise the water was about an inch from coming into my waders I had to use a walking stick just to get across the Creek. I find the site again pull my detector out of the backpack can start frantically assembling it I figured this place is going to be a treasure trove. I start detecting and for the first hour I get no signals other than small iron. I dug up a lot of deer rifle cartridges so many that I got tired of digging them. I got yet another signal I knew was going to be a deer rifle shell so I just left it in the ground because I was so sure that it was going to be a deer rifle shell. I hunted hard and came up with almost nothing, some broken bits of harmonica reed etc. long story short I decided to go back and dig up my "deer rifle shell". here it is it turns out it's a really nice button. early 18 hundreds state or local militia. it just goes to show you never know what that signal is till you dig it up. and once again thanks to the people in the what is it forum that helped me confirm my suspicions that it was a militia Button and definitely pre Civil War.
