I just discovered historical maps for my area in Ohio. Man, I’ve been missing out! That coupled with county property maps and old aerial maps, man they are a gold mind! I just realized that there was an old baseball field in the early 1900’s that hosted a negro league pretty much in my back yard. . It’s of course long gone and now a wooded area of a golf course sits on its infield. I did notice however that where the stands were located are now on vacant land. My question is do you think it would be worth it to even try to detect there, haven’t hat a bunch of land was probably moved around when the golf course was created? I do plan on detecting the vacant land where the former stands were located. Let me know what you guys think.

You never know what's there until you swing your coil over it.

Check it out. Might be a winner. Used to live near the home of the Homestead Grays.

Check out the quote in my signature block!

Good luck!

If its a large area I'd do detecting surveys in various spots, when/if you nail anything good then you can do a comprehensive check of the area.

Thanks for the tip, Xraywolf, appreciate it. It is a bit larger, so I think I will concentrate in the areas that the grandstands were on the map and maybe do a few survey spots for the field.

Don't forget to compare old and new topography maps to your aerials. You'll see dwellings and old roads on topo maps and as they become abandoned or bought for the property and not paying taxes on a dwelling. They come off the topo maps. Little squares are dwellings on the map.

Great idea, Thanks Rick.

Interested in seeing what you find

I know what I would do.....start swinging! Can't wait to see what you find.

Not there, not yet
I’m practicing with my new machine (ACE 400), in a park close to my house, I plan on going to this location this weekend when I get a little more time than an hour after work before the sun goes down. I’ll keep you guys posted!

Gotta be something in there with all that human activity.
