I recently purchased a lot of about 100 CDV's and a few tin types from a picker friend of mine. There are a couple Union soldier photos and one Mathew Brady photo that I singled out for some help on. Disregard those crazy prices that someone wrote on them.

The Mathew Brady photo is of an unknown gentleman. I wanted to post it here and ask if he looks recognizable to anyone? A long shot I know but it is a Brady photo, so it's worth a little research.

The first soldier photo I was trying to see if anyone could ID the unit on the Kepi. It looks like the 7th infantry but I cannot make out what is above the bugle. Anybody?

The last photo is an officer of some sort but I cannot make out the details on his hat. I believe he is a naval officer, anyone? There are 2 initials that appear to be "period" inscribed on the back top left corner, they are F.E..
Also, does he look familiar to anyone?

Love the pics! Is that an E above the 7th infantry to represent his Company? Noticed on the stamp it looks like initials and last name with 1865.

I was thinking that was JS as in the photographer Jacob Shaw. There was a "photograph tax" inacted on August 1, 1864 that required photographers to pay a tax on their photographs. This was in part, an effort to raise money to help pay for the war. These stamps were usually affixed to the backs of the photos.

I think I id'd the hat badge on the officer photo. It is US Navy albeit the anchor is slightly tilted looks like.

Forgot to mention that the other word is the month "March" 1865. Some dummy wrote that on the front of the photo at the bottom also.
As far as the hat cipher, to me it looks like two conjoined letters or numbers or something. Definitely looks like more going on than a single letter. Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it.

Based on the hat and uniform sleeve stripe, the third guy looks to be a Ensign in 1862.
