Old piece of metal from a farm field

Any clue what the item depicted here is? Just seems like a mystery piece that could have been part of really anything. Mother in law said it reminded her of something they used to put on the heels of shoes/boots but it looks a little small? Also, anyone have any idea on what type of bullet is next to it? Farm fields date back to the 1700's. I severely doubt anything depicted here is even CLOSE to that century, but figured I'd just give a little history on the land for reference.
