Hey thanks. Update on the second photo: I scraped the metal and its bright like a copper penny underneath. I think it's a piece of copper? But that's weird there would be a piece of copper like that in the ground. Thanks.
 

The backward "S" shaped item is a check strap out of the end of a railroad tie.
 

Early S-hooks were also made from strips of metal for hanging cook pots from. I like the needle! I have one, too. Nice finds!
