Hi and thank you in advance for any help you do share on this. I have a old wood handmade box 4 inches. It has a inlaid anchor at top.possibly navy? Has metal like braces at edges almost like how they used dove tails to hold box together. Inside a very worn material. It’s just a great piece. Any thoughts? Thanks again. 3DA3115B-969C-4BDA-8E17-A377220712FC.jpeg4F0C8B98-8563-4C92-8927-3FB499D21486.jpeg13240F0E-4376-4691-92EF-A0C33E8D9BDA.jpeg

I had a small compass and sextant in a box similar to that. Mine was a knock off made in India.

The two square marks on the velvet suggest that this held something specific for a long period of time but may or may not have been purpose-made to hold that item. I’ve seen them purpose-made with all kinds of things inside… usually nautical-themed things like sextants, compasses, bosun’s whistles, telescopes, miniature tankards for use as shot glasses and keepsakes of both a nautical and non-nautical nature. Usually, if purpose made, the shape of the box or some internal compartmentalisation reflects the item it was designed to hold.

This one has wax seal paraphernalia in it, and also has a small drawer opening from the side:

They were also produced as empty boxes in which a gentleman might keep his cufflinks, tie-pins, watches or whatever… like this one:

With that lining I would have to think that it was a small jewelry box like for a dressing table.

The grain of the wood and the fitment of the corner braces suggests India, Pakistan, or Indonesia. Probably not terribly old. I'm guessing the wood is very dense and heavy?
