Spent this morning scouting sites from an 1870 map.
It shows a railroad station (which i think is now under pavement)
with 2 homesites on a hill behind it.
located 2 wells, with no signs of any foundations nearby ??
be careful out in the woods! these are the first wells i've found like this,
just open holes in the ground :o
Got back later with my detector about 30 minutes before dark,
Dug yet another bell, and a modern(I think) deer medallion.
Better than clad! Thanks for look ing & HH to all

Nice finds and pics!

Cool medalion Herbie. How is it you dont have any snow on the ground? We got some yesterday, but looks like rain coming this weekend. :icon_thumright:

Hate to fall in that thing out in no where. How deep is it? Nice deer head!

Thanks for the replies! these bells have been following me lately, think I've gotten 4 in the last 3 weeks :laughing7:
Both wells have leaf fill up to a 4-6 foot depth, it is possible you could sink much deeper, didn't think to check inside them, getting my old harness out today!

cool finds
can't wait to hear if anything is down those holes! :)
good luck!!

Lay a large log across the well. I was alone far from the road and almost fell into a 15 foot deep well. My foot went into a groundhog hole that was next to the well wall. The well was flush with the ground and covered up with weeds laying flat. They are hard to see and dangerous.

Looks like the same kind of bell i found up here... but mine looks like there chines letters on it...

love that medallion!

if there are 2 wells there ..then that's where the homesites were. maybe they were just cabins built above ground and no cellar holes were dug :dontknow:
if that's the case you may do very well there!. with no obvious cellar holes those areas probably never been hit by other detectorists. work em and see what else you dig up
not every homeowner in colonial days dug a cellar, just so you know.

Am headed up there now, (i just read through the first page of 'Best of T-net' :hello2:)
Will be searching the flat areas around the wells today,(they are in very hilly terrain)
i will enter them at some point to see what's down there.
Best digs to you all!

Great deer medallion, good luck with your exploring. :icon_thumleft:....................K.KID.

Hurry up ! I'm anxious to see what's down there =]

Nice finds and pics... congrats !

cool looking deer!!!! MR TUFF

Nice hunt and pics! Maybe you are not reading the land right or the foundations are filled over with leaves, hard to believe a well like that has no connection to a house or farm. However, I find those weird and unusual spots like that occasionally. I have a site I want to dig, a cellar hole, detected the area and didn't find much but one find, a knife, leads me to believe it dates to around 800-1000 AD, it is at the edge of a rock query. I will check it out as weather permits, 12" of snow as I type, LOL. HH, Mike

The site should have more than just a well, may have been a log cabin.

Look for stones in a square, most likely to be around 15-20 feet apart, but they may have taken and put onto a stonewall. You may just fine a place in the woods with iron reading from nails from the cabin.Good luck

At least you got out on the hunt! Everyday cannot be killer. Nice finds :icon_thumleft:
