OK so I went out to my mailbox today and found these. a nickle, and a troy ounce of silver ??? WTF, turns out the silver is from a friend that just felt like it, no idea I recently became addicted to MD'ing and has my initials all over it :) "J" is for uncle Jeff .. "M" is for my last name LOL.. what a fluke .... the nickle is from some add campaign that want me to send back mroe than a nickle

Will he be my friend too?

OK I have a question. I can cut this out of the plastic and not hurt the value correct? I mean its not like a graded coin or something it sole value is the fact that it is silver. So if it gets tarnished or scratched it wont really hurt the value its still 1 ounce silver?

OK seriously? No one can tell me if I will drastically effect the value of this ingot by taking it out of the plastic? I personally don't see it since it is NOT a graded and sealed coin. While yes the ingot would grade excellent now would I actually get less 50 years from now because I removed it from the plastic? Is it OK to open it so I can actually touch it?

As far as I would guess...its value is based off of the current value of a Troy Ounce of Silver...condition shouldn't matter.

Also...the JM is actually the Assayers initials right? Johnson Matthey?

Just by coincidence it happens to be your initials...

Yes its the Assayers mark .. just by a fluke its my initials as well.. but thanks that is what I was asking.. won't hurt the value and I can actually take it out of the plastic and touch it. kewl

Cool gift, have fun fondling the new bar of silver.:icon_thumleft:

Makes me think of the "Silver and Gold" prospector from Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. He would throw his pick and taste it for precious metals.

Not the greatest idea to remove it from the sealed plastic. That brand tends to carry a nice premium over plain old silver. not a great loss or anything but it will start to tarnish quicker and lose a touch of premium value. IMHO.
May I say it is a nice gift and there is nothing wrong with drilling a hole in it and wearing it on a necklace either.
Up to you.
