I'm newer to MD. I have an ace 250 i have found lots of junk on all metals , as to be expected. Today i tried it on coin setting in my yard on lower sensitivity around 3. I found a penny form 1987 and a nickle 1981. But it would go off in silver area good signal and i would pin point it 2-4 inches deep and dig. I would end up digging like 5-7 inches and making the hole wider and wider.. To find nothing???..... So i go over the pile of sand/dirt that i dug up with the MD. nothing.. and nothing in the hole.... I am confused, is this a operator error?? And also if i eliminate lets say tabs and beer cans will that eliminate chances of finding some coins?? Thanks for any help anyone could give me!! ;D

Make sure you have good alkaline batteries in the unit, cheap or weak batteries will give false signals.
It just takes getting used to the machine and some practise. Keep going back over your first areas after you get better.
As far as the settings go turn down the discriminator and dig it all. I know it gets old but a clean area is a good area for future quick hunts for recently lost stuff. I've also seen some coils hitting or reading on the back of the coil instead of the center.

Hey Jack, I too have an ACE250 and have had success so far. When the cursor went to silver range did it bounce around??? If so you may have detected junk. I use mine in mostly coins or custom and have done well. You may want to build a coin garden to test you and your machine. I have had a tough time pinpointing with my ace, and have also dug some empty holes. Go back over an area where you had this problem and sometimes you will pinpoint a little differently. In time you'll get it down to a science!!! I hope I do too!!!LOL

I do not own an Ace, but another older garrett, with an LCD screen........I dug a whole lotta junk at first too...
They suggest you do not use much disc. at first, and dig every target to get use to the different sounds your detector is giving you.......
For the first 10-20 hours........This is good..........sound advice (no pun intended)......Don't pay to much attention to the screen that first 10-20 hours.....Listen to the different sounds it makes.......When you get a good REPEATABLE signal......go east west...west east....
if you get a solid signal in both directions..........Then go north south .....south north.......If and only if you have a solid signal in 3 of the 4
directions....THEN look at your screen.......It should not bounce more than one notch......as you go over it again.......
East/West West/East N/S S/N........If the signal is good E/W and W/E......but no solid signal N/Sand S/N.........It is garbage !
If you have a solid signal in 4 directions........than before you look at the screen ID......Try to memorize that sound.....
Then when you look at the ID.........You will learn quicker.......what it is trying to teach you.......
Oh yes...........If it is a good signal in 3 of 4 directions.........It is likely a coin on an angle, and the odd direction that you do not receive
a signal is the high side of the angled coin......If you understood that you can almost picture the way the coin is laying in the earth......
The vertical coins are tough for me...........I dont quit have a picture in my mind how it lays ,or what its supposed to sound like....
As far as pinpoint............I don't know ,,,every macine is different......But if you have the oliptical coil that the Ace comes with...........Maybe either another Ace user...........Or Lonewolf can help you there.......Hope you could get something useful out of this....H.H.

I just got my Ace last Thur., The first 2 hrs. were very encouraging but have gone down hill since. I've dug holes big enough to plant trees in, I once had a dog who would dig holes on command for planting saplings, I really wish that dog was still around as my new dog is to stupid to learn how. It seems that my lot was a dumping ground for old sq. nails, need any? Went to dig elsewhere and found a pickle fork and a 1/2 in. by 14 ft. steel cable. I do think that my holes are getting smaller since I backed off on the sensitivity. Just a matter of hrs. on the m.d. till improvment comes. Good Luck.

I take my jack with me i start the hole and tell her to get the lizzard and she continues to dig, maybe you should get a jack.... I also have one heck of a nail collection.. I had a confuseing afternoon though, i went to this park and along this one side is R.R. tracks i was MD about 2' from the track. Detector set at 2 for sensitivity and i had one heck of a ding all the way to the right sounded like i won big at the slots!! so i start moving rocks looking for somthing silver 2" down, nothing... i dont know... grrr need to practice more..

Sounds like you "newbies" have just started using a metal detector and expect to find a fortune on your first time out......Wrong......it takes practice and more important a lot of patience....The machines you have now,are a 1000 time better than what we had 35 years ago....and guess what, every time I buy a new one I have to learn all over again...patience,practice and knowledge of your machines will make you the best md'ers in the future....my 2 cents from an old "fart" ;D ;D
