ONE LAST TIME
Yeah, me too. Judging by the titles of most of the last posts this past week, everyone with a metal detector is rushing to get in one more hunt for the year. It all sounds so.. mellow dramatic.. so FINAL! It’s okay people.. really! Yeah, it’s the end of the year.. not the end of the world! <grinning> There will be other days to detect, at least I HOPE there will be. Yeah, I am as guilty as any of the rest of you though. I awoke early this morning, the last day of the calendar year of 2009, a day off no less, and decided that cold and wet or not, I was going to get in one more hunt myself before the year ended.
AND SO I DID!
As I said, it was early, for a day off anyway, I arose a little after six in the morning, it was still dark. Last night when I went to bed the ground was covered with a fresh new blanket of snow, even the pavement and the street was covered. This morning, however, with warmer temperatures (42 deg. F) the snow had melted and there was a fine misty drizzle falling from the sky. More like a fog than rain I was call it. Where to go? It being a holiday and all, the kiddies were out of school today, so that information and the wet weather pretty much made the decision for me, I’d be hunting Tot-Lots at one or more of the local elementary schools. That is, I’d go hunting after the sun came up anyway. While I waited for sunrise I figured I could fix a bite to eat, read the paper and email, check out the new posts on Treasure Net, and of course, check out the weather online as well. It seems that it was being predicted a day of cloudy wet and turning colder all day long, rain turning to snow by the end of the day. That is, if the day ever got going, the sun never did “rise” as it were. Oh sure, it got light out, but, well, you know, cloudy and drizzling mist. *sigh*
And SNOW for New Years Eve! What’s more is that tonight there will be a “BLUE MOON” too. Cool!
<breaking into song> ~Oh Blue Moon of Kentucky, keep on shining..~ (thank you Bill Monroe)
Well it eventually did lighten up enough outside this morning to actually see your hand in front of your face, eventually. That was all I needed! I kissed my sleeping wife, grabbed my detector and out the door I went! YEEEHAAAWWWW! Woodchips Here I come!
Now there are lots of elementary schools in my fair city of Lexington Kentucky. I’ve been to one and all of them at some point over the past few years since I began metal detecting. Some of them have older playgrounds and equipment, some of them have newer bigger playgrounds, some have next to nothing. I remember the better ones of course and make it a point to “swing by” and check them out at least a couple of times a year now. Some of the schoolyards are, or were, overdue for a visit this morning. I decided on one of the larger schools to begin my hunt this morning, it wasn’t to awfully far from my home so it was only a short drive before I could begin plucking treasures from the woodchips.
As I said, it had been a while since I’d last been to this particular schoolyard so I was anticipating a fairly good yield from the tot-lot. And I was not disappointed. I began finding coins even before stepping into the actual woodchips. Of course, the chips would prove to be very fruitful this morning as I found coin after coin after coin. Oh sure, there were a lot of pennies, there always are...usually.. a LOT of pennies! What blew my mind today was the number of nickels I found. What was even more amazing was the near absence of pull tabs. I think I might have uncovered all of three for the whole morning. Can you believe it? ONLY THREE?
Pull tabs aren’t the only trash you find in the woodchips though, especially at schoolyard playgrounds, what took the prize for most abundant today was the little metal barrels that secure the eraser heads to the top of number 2 pencils. They are FREAKIN’ EVERYWHERE! Some even still had pencils still attached. Of course there are the buttons and snaps and grommets from various items of clothing that inhabit the woodchips too. I found a bunch of those today.

The kiddies tend to lose those little Curios and oddities that they bring to share with the other kiddies, you know, odd coins, souvenirs and even toys. I found some of those too, like this Trike (matchbox toy)

These “stretched” coins were found at both of the playgrounds I detected this morning, two from an Ohio theme park, and the third from Gatlinburg, Tennessee. That’s pretty cool, because my wife and I were married in Gatlinburg, a few years ago... <smile>

I have found Wheat Pennies at the tot-lots ever since I began this hobby of metal detecting, some three years ago or so now, but I’ve never found one that was bent before. Today I found one, that was bent. I also found a very LARGE Penny too, it’s as big or actually a bit larger than a quarter! Of course it’s not a U.S. coin, but it is older. 1952 I think it was.. a King George Penny?

Never found a Jamaican coin before today either, but I can’t say that anymore now can I? Ah yes.. show and tell. The kiddies do it, and so do we. We adults that is.. Right here on Treasure Net, right now, you’re reading it! <grin>
Foreign coins are fun to find, so are domestic coins, even the dinky toys and other stuff, but what really gets the heart racing, whether it’s in the woodchips of a playground or under a rose bush at an old house.. is the glint of jewelry. Most of the “bling” one might find at the tot-lots is going to be junk of course. Something you might get out of a bubble gum machine, or perhaps the costume jewelry racks at the local department stores even. But sometimes, you pull up something REAL and nice. Well I’m not so sure about one of my finds today. Oh it’s nice, and it’s “real” of sorts I guess, but it’s not stamped with a hallmark of any kind so I doubt that it’s precious in that regard. Still though, it’s cute, if tiny, and it was fun to find. It’s the little tiny ring shown with the other junk jewelry I found today. It’s heavy for its size too, with a red stone in the center and shouldered with two small (very very small) white “stones” on either side.

I tried to take some closer pictures to show more detail, but this is the best I could do..

I like it.. even if it’s too small for even my wife to wear. Another addition to my growing collections of odds and ends found metal detecting I suppose. Likewise would be this Key Fob I found today too. I guess someone was/is a NASCAR fan. <grin>

As the morning wore on, the mist and cooler temps began to settle into my bones, that and I had obligations to attend to this afternoon, so this last outing of 2009 had to come to an end. *sigh* I know there will be other days of detecting to come, hopefully with better weather even, but it is a little sad that the year is drawing to an end. It’s been a very good year for me with this hobby, again, even if I’ve only got a couple of other years to compare it with. Today was a very good day too, perhaps not as productive as some days this past year, but then again, perhaps far more productive than others as well.

Oh it was a good day. I had fun! I found Coins! I found Treasures! I found oddities! And I found Bling! More than enough clad to pay for my gas and batteries and a pretty good addition to the vacation fund! WooHoo! A fine note on which to end another year of metal detecting. I hope you have all had a good year. I hope that some of you had a good day. And I sincerely hope that each and everyone of you have a very SAFE and HAPPY NEW YEAR.
.. and of course, when you do resume the search..
